Dania Furniture Recalls Bookcases After Child Dies in Tip-Over

In June 2024, Dania Furniture of Boise, Idaho, announced a recall for about 940 bookcase after the tragic death of a 4-year-old child.

The child became trapped and died when the unanchored bookcase tipped over in August 2023, according to the recall.

The recall involves about 940 Hayden bookcases, which were manufactured in Italy. They were sold exclusively at Dania Furniture stores nationwide in the U.S. and online at https://daniafurniture.com from November 2017 through February 2024 for about $370.

Consumers can identify the bookcases by looking at a label on the back of each unit, which has the product name and SKU LB2225/A. The bookcases have 6 cubbies and 3 sliding white doors.

Dania Furniture is urging customers to immediately stop using the bookcases if they are not anchored to the wall. The company is offering free in-home installation of tip-over restraint kits, or a full refund and free pickup and disposal of the recalled bookcases.

Millions of Plastic Bookcase Anchors Recalled for Failure to Prevent Tip-Over Accidents

In January 2024, New Age Industries (“New Age”) Furniture recalled millions of plastic zip-ties used with Furniture Tip-Over Kits or Anti-Tip Restraints because the plastic can become brittle or break, which can result in a tip-over accident.

What Happened?

There were 2 reports of the plastic zip-tie becoming brittle over time and breaking. This could allow a bookcase, dresser, or other heavy piece of furniture to tip over, which poses a deadly safety hazard.

What is the Risk?

  • Death
  • Entrapment
  • Suffocation
  • Crushing injuries
  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries or concussion
  • And more

What is the Problem?

The plastic zip tie used with the recalled furniture tip kits can break, which can allow a clothing storage unit that is anchored to the wall to detach during a furniture tip-over event, posing a tip-over and entrapment hazard that can result in death or serious injuries.
