Furniture Tip-Over Accidents Kill 1 Child Every 2 Weeks
Over 459 children have died in furniture tip-over accidents in the U.S. since 2000. Every 2 weeks, one child in the U.S. dies when a piece of furniture, dresser, bookshelf, TV, or appliance falls on them, and a child is injured every 20 minutes, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
How To Anchor It
These tragedies can be prevented by bolting furniture to the wall. Parents can install anti-tip devices, also known as anchoring kits or straps, which cost as little as $5 and take only a few minutes to install.
Please visit www.AnchotIt.gov to learn more about how to secure furniture and TVs to protect children from tip-over accidents.
What is the Risk?
Young children — especially toddlers — love to pull out drawers and use them to climb up dressers and chests to reach things up above.
Unfortunately, this can result in tragic deadly accidents when the dresser tips over and crushes the child underneath. TVs and other heavy objects can also fall onto the child and cause injury or death.
If the child is not instantly killed, they can also suffocate to death within minutes if they are trapped underneath heavy furniture or a TV.
Here is a video to show exactly how these accidents typically occur:
IKEA Tip-Over Recalls
In June 2016, IKEA recalled around 17.3 million dressers and chests after at least 8 children died in tip-over accidents, and more than 100 others were seriously injured.
IKEA Pays $50 Million Settlement in Tip-Over Lawsuit
In January 2020, IKEA agreed to pay a $46 million settlement to the family of Jozef Dudek, a 2 year-old boy who was crushed to death under a recalled IKEA Malm dresser at his home in California in 2017. The family was never notified of the recall, despite being an “Ikea Family” member at the store.
In December 2016, IKEA paid a $50 million settlement to the families of 3 toddler boys who died under a recalled MALM dresser that tipped over.
