UPDATE: BrightFarms Spinach & Salad Kits Recalled for Listeria
In January 2024, BrightFarms recalled certain packages of Baby Spinach and several types of Salad Kits that may be contaminated with Listeria. No illnesses were reported. The recall involves:
- BrightFarms Baby Spinach
- BrightFarms Mediterranean Crunch Kit
- BrightFarms Chickpea Caesar Crunch Kit
- BrightFarms Bacon Ranch Crunch Kit
- BrightFarms Southwest Chipotle
FDA Finds Outbreak Strain of Salmonella Drainage Pond Next to BrightFarms Facility
In October 2021, the FDA issued an update to declare the Salmonella outbreak linked to BrightFarms salad greens was over. Investigators also found the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium in an outdoor storm water drainage pond located adjacent to the facility.
BrightFarms Expands Recall to Include Baby Spinach
On July 28, 2021, BrightFarms expanded a salad recall to include BrightFarms Baby Spinach in 4-oz and 8-oz packages due to a risk of Salmonella contamination. The spinach was packaged in clear, plastic clamshells with “best by” dates through 7/26/2021.
1st BrightFarms Salad Recall for Salmonella
On July 15, 2021, BrightFarms recalled packaged salad greens after an outbreak of Salmonella infected at least 11 people in 3 states, including 2 people who were hospitalized. Six people who were interviewed said they ate or bought BrightFarms salad before getting sick, according to the FDA.
What Salad Greens Were Recalled?
BrightFarms recalled salad greens that were sold in a plastic clamshell container, labeled as “fresh from Rochelle, IL,” with best-by dates through July 29, 2021. The products include:
- BrightFarms Nutrigreens (3 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Butter Crisp (4 oz. Package)
- BrightFarms Harvest Crunch® (4 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Mighty Romaine (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
- BrightFarms 50/50 Spring & Spinach (4 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Spring Crunch (4 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Spring Mix (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Sunny Crunch® (4 oz. and 8 oz. package)
- BrightFarms Lakeside Crunch (4 oz. Package)
How Many People Got Sick?
As of July, 2021, at least 31 people were infected with Salmonella Typhimurium in 4 states, including 4 people who were hospitalized due to a severe illness. The illnesses started between June 10 to June 15, 2021. More recent illnesses may not be reported yet, so the true case count may be higher, according to the outbreak investigation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
