Burrito Delight Salmonella Outbreak

On February 23, health officials reported that a Salmonella outbreak infected12 people, including 6 who ate food at catered events at Aims Community College on February 9 and 13, 2018.

Four illnesses are linked to the Burrito Delight restaurants in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Another 2 illnesses are linked to food that was catered from Burrito Delight by a private company.

What is the problem?

Health officials in Weld County, Colorado ordered the temporary closure of two Burrito Delight restaurants in the cities of Fort Lupton and Dacono, which are located near Denver, Colorado.

Food Safety Violations

An inspection of the location in Fort Lupton identified multiple violations, including a dead rat behind one of the coolers, employees failing to wash their hands, and food at incorrect temperatures.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

The symptoms of Salmonella usually appear within 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food, and last for 4 to 7 days.

Mark E. Wallace, the executive director of the Weld County Health Department said in a press release:

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes symptoms like diarrhea, upset stomach, fever and occasionally vomiting. Anyone who suspects they became ill should contact their health care provider.”

When Will Burrito Delight Re-Open?

It can take up to 4 weeks for health officials to link an illness to an ongoing outbreak, so it is possible that more illnesses will be reported.

In the meantime, the public is not at risk. Burrito Delight will not be allowed to re-open until they pass an inspection that shows they are in compliance with state health-code laws in Colorado.

Burrito Delight must re-train staff or hire new staff, all employees must test negative for Salmonella, all food inventory must be replaced, and the restaurants must be thoroughly sanitized.
