Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Busseto Charcuterie Sampler
On January 18, 2024, the CDC issued a Food Safety Alert for two types of charcuterie meat trays after at least 47 people in got Salmonella between November 2023 and January 2024.
The warning involves the following charcuterie meat trays:
- Busseto® Charcuterie Sampler: Has prosciutto, sweet soppressata, and dry coppa. Sold at Sam’s Club. Comes in a twin-pack (two 9-oz. trays). All lot codes are being recalled.
- Fratelli Beretta® Antipasto Gran Beretta: Has black pepper coated dry salami, Italian dry salami, dry coppa, and prosciutto. Sold at Costco. Comes in a twin-pack (two 12-oz. trays). All lot codes are being recalled.
Ten people were hospitalized due to a severe illness. Illnesses were reported in 22 states.
What Happened?
Salmonella was found in an unopened tray of “Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler Prosciutto, Sweet Soppressata, and Dry Coppa” which was collected from the home of a sick person in Minnesota.
The meat tested positive for the outbreak strain of Salmonella, according to the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS).
Public Health Alert for Fratelli Beretta Antipasto Gran Beretta
On January 18, 2024, the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a Public Health Alert for certain Busseto® Charcuterie Sampler (sold at Sam’s Club) and Fratelli Beretta® Antipasto Gran Beretta (sold at Costco) due to a risk of Salmonella contamination.
Busseto Foods Charcuterie Sampler Recall
On January 3, 2024, Fratelli Beretta USA Inc. recalled about 11,097 pounds of charcuterie meat trays that may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The recalled charcuterie tray was produced on October 30, 2023. The following items are being recalled:
- 18-oz. plastic tray packages containing “BUSSETO FOODS CHARCUTERIE SAMPLER Prosciutto, Sweet Sopressata, and Dry Coppa” with lot code L075330300 and “BEST IF USED BY APR 27 24. “The products are sold as a twin pack with two 9-oz. packages.
These charcuterie trays were shipped to Sam’s Club distribution centers in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Texas, but they were sold in 27 states.
What is the Risk?
Eating food that is contaminated with Salmonella can cause food poisoning. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 hours to 6 days of eating the food. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days and most people recover on their own.
In some cases, the diarrhea is so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. The risk is highest for young children, elderly adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.
