In October 2025, health officials in Maine announced a recall for certain Yani Cannabis Vape Cartridges that tested positive for unsafe levels of a pesticide, and one person reported health problems.

What Happened?

The Maine Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP) announced a recall for certain Yani Cannabis Vape Cartridges that tested positive for unsafe levels of a pesticide called Chlorfenapyr.

The recall was the result of an investigation into a complaint from a consumer who experienced an “adverse health reaction” after using a cartridge from the “Watermelon Chimera” strain.

What is Chlorfenapyr?

Chlorfenapyr is a pesticide that is sprayed on cannabis crops to kill insects and mites, despite the health risks to people who inhale cannabis that is contaminated with this toxic chemical.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

“Although [chlorfenapyr] has been identified as a moderately toxic pesticide by the World Health Organization (WHO), the mortality rate of poisoned patients is extremely high. There is no specific antidote for chlorfenapyr poisoning.”

Chlorfenapyr Poisoning Can Be Deadly

There is no specific antidote for chlorfenapyr poisoning. After it is absorbed by the body, it is slowly released into the blood. Chlorfenapyr poisoning is highly lethal and difficult to treat. High fever and altered mental status are the characteristic symptoms, which may soon be followed by respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and death.
