UPDATE: Kandy Cantaloupe Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In September 2024, Eagle Produce LLC of Arizona recalled 224 cases of whole “Kandy” Cantaloupe due to a risk of Salmonella. No illnesses were reported, but a cantaloupe from a retail store in Michigan tested positive for Salmonella.
The recall involves Kandy® Cantaloupes that were distributed to various retail supermarkets between August 13 and August 17, 2024 in Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Virginia and sold in retail supermarkets.
The cantaloupes can be identified by a red-and-white sticker label with “KANDY” across the top, UPC Number Code 4050, and Lot Code 846468.
Cantaloupe Linked to Deadly Salmonella Outbreak
In November 2023, health officials warned people not to eat certain whole, fresh cantaloupes from Mexico after a deadly outbreak of Salmonella was reported in dozens of states. The cantaloupes were sold nationwide under the “Malichita” and “Rudy” brand-names.
As of January 19, 2024, a total of 407 cases of Salmonella have been reported from 44 states, with the most recent illness reported on December 25, 2023, according to the CDC Outbreak Advisory. At least 6 people died and 158 people were hospitalized due to a severe illness.
Canada Reports Dozens of Illnesses from Cantaloupe
In November 2023, Health Canada also reported dozens of illnesses from cantaloupe. As of November 24, 2023, there were 63 laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella in Canada between mid-October and mid-November 2023. At least 17 people were hospitalized, including one person who died.
2023: Cantaloupes Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In late 2023, multiple recalls were issued for cantaloupes after a deadly outbreak of Salmonella in the U.S. and Canada. The recalls include:
- Whole fresh cantaloupe with stickers labeled as “Malichita” or “Rudy” or “4050” and “Product of Mexico / produit du Mexique”
- Crown Jewels Produce — Sent boxes of cantaloupe to retailers and wholesalers labeled as “Malachita / Z Farms”
- Trufresh (Sofia Produce)
- Pacific Trellis
The recall also includes pre-cut cantaloupe and secondary products that were made with the recalled cantaloupe, such as:
- ALDI cantaloupe, cut cantaloupe, and pineapple spears in clamshell packages with best-by dates between October 27 and October 31
- Vinyard cantaloupe chunks and cubes, fruit mixes, melon medleys, and fruit cups
- Freshness Guaranteed cantaloupe chunks, melon mix, fruit blend, bowls, fruit trays, mixed fruit; and RaceTrac fruit medley sold in IN, MI, OH, KY, NC, TN, VA, IL, TX, LA
- Kwik Trip: Fresh-cut fruit cups and trays containing cantaloupe with sell-by dates of November 4, 2023, through December 3, 2023 at Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Stop-N-Go, Tobacco Outlet Plus Grocery, and Tobacco Outlet Plus convenience stores in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and South Dakota.
- Bix Produce (Created Fresh! cantaloupe, Grab ‘N Go Fruit Cups, etc.)
- GHGA (Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, Kroger)
- Cut Fruit Express (Caribou Coffee Fruit Mix)

Signs & Symptoms of Salmonella
The symptoms of a Salmonella infection typically start 6 to 73 hours after eating contaminated food, and last for 4 to 7 days. The symptoms may include:
- fever
- chills
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- headache
- abdominal cramps
