September 2018 — Chipotle has confirmed that a food poisoning outbreak that sickened 647 people in Ohio was caused by bacteria that grows when food is left out at unsafe temperatures.

Nearly 700 people suffered nausea, diarrhea, fever, and other gastrointestinal symptoms after eating at a Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant in Powell, Ohio, between July 26 and July 30.

The first lawsuit was filed by Philip Szyller, a man who fell ill after eating chicken tacos at Chipotle on July 29. He has since experienced fever, diarrhea, nausea, headaches, fatigue, and hot and cold flashes.

CDC Investigates Another E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Chipotle

December 21, 2015 — Just as one E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle appears to be winding down, the CDC has opened an investigation into another outbreak that has sickened five people in three states: Kansas (1), North Dakota (1), and Oklahoma (3). Investigators say all of the victims reported eating at Chipotle before getting sick. The illnesses occurred between November 18-26. Click here to read more.

Chipotle E. Coli Outbreak

On December 4, 2015, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued an update to report seven more illnesses, bringing the total to 52 infections in nine states.

Case count by state: California (3), Illinois (1), Maryland (1), Minnesota (2), New York (1), Ohio (3), Oregon (13), Pennsylvania (1), and Washington state (27).

At least forty-three the victims reported eating at Chipotle before getting sick, although no single ingredient or meal has been blamed on the outbreak. Chipotle temporarily closed 43 restaurants in Washington and Oregon for cleaning after 45 people in six states reported illness in mid-October. Since then, Chipotle hired Seattle-based IEH Laboratories to study the problem and agreed to implement the company’s recommendations.

Investigators identified the strain as Shiga-toxin producing E. coli O26, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps, and more. Lawsuits have been filed by at least two victims in Washington and one in Oregon.

Chipotle Salmonella Outbreak in Minnesota

An outbreak of Salmonella Newport has sickened at least 64 people who ate at Chipotle restaurants in Minnesota. Nine people were hospitalized and all recovered. Illnesses occurred in August and September 2015. Several victims have filed lawsuits, KMSP News reports.

Tomatoes were identified as the source of the outbreak, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Chipotle has changed tomato suppliers and re-opened 22 restaurants that temporarily closed for cleaning.

Infection with Salmonella is not usually serious for healthy adults, but in rare cases it spreads to the bloodstream and causes life-threatening bacteremia (blood poisoning).

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Headache
  • Possible nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite

Norovirus Outbreak at Chipotle in California

An outbreak of Norovirus at a Chipotle restaurant located in Simi Valley, California sickened at least 80 customers and 18 employees in August 2015. The restaurant closed for deep-cleaning and infected employees were not allowed to work. The Ventura County Environmental Health Division issued a report (PDF) on the outbreak, warning:

“Norovirus is a very contagious virus. You can get norovirus from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces. The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute gastroenteritis). This leads to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.”
