Gold Medal Flour Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak

In April 2023, General Mills recalled four types of Gold Medal® All-Purpose Flour after 13 people were infected with Salmonella. The recall includes Gold Medal® Bleached and Unbleached All-Purpose Flour with “Better If Used By” dates of March 27, 2024, and March 28, 2024.

What Happened?

General Mills announced the recall after the outbreak strain of Salmonella was discovered in a sample of flour that was collected by health officials at a facility in Kansas City, Missouri.

How Many People Got Sick?

Health officials confirmed that 14 people in 13 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella between December 2022 and May 2023, including 3 people who were hospitalized due to a severe illness, according to the outbreak investigation posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Gold Medal Flour Recalled After E. Coli Outbreak

In May 2016, General Mills issued a massive recall for several varieties of Gold Medal® Flour after an outbreak of E. coli infected dozens of people nationwide.

At least 64 people in 23 states were infected with E. coli after eating or touching raw flour since December 2015, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

The recall included many products, including flours, cake mixes, pancake and biscuit mixes, and more. These products were sold under brand-names like Gold Medal Flour, Gold Medal Wondra Flour, and Signature Kitchens Flour.

What is the Problem?

Flour is a raw ingredient that is not heat-treated to kill bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. People can become sick after eating dough, batter, or handling play-dough or other crafts that use raw flour.

E. Coli Complications Can Be Deadly

People who are infected with E. coli can develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This serious disease occurs in 5-10% of people who are infected with the bacterium E. coli O157:H7.

Serious Complications & Symptoms of Salmonella

People who are infected with Salmonella rarely develop a life-threatening illness, but it can potentially cause serious complications.

The most common symptoms of Salmonella typically last for 4-7 days, and include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. According to the FDA:

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
