Raw Sprouts and Food Poisoning

Raw sprouts have been linked to dozens of outbreaks of food poisoning, according to the CDC. The problem is that Salmonella and E. coli thrive in the warm, wet conditions that sprouts require to grow. Cooking sprouts thoroughly reduces the risk of food poisoning by killing bacteria, but Jimmy John’s serves raw sprouts on their sandwiches.

What is E. coli?

E. coli is a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning, with symptoms like bloody diarrhea and fever. Some people develop a life-threatening form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This condition can lead to serious kidney damage and death.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is the most common bacterial cause of food poisoning in the U.S. and results in the the highest number of hospitalizations and deaths. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12-72 hours after infection.
