UPDATE: Citterio Salame Sticks Recalled

On November 10, 2021, Euro Foods finally announced a recall for over 119,000 pounds of Citterio® salame stick products due to a risk of contamination with Salmonella. No recall was requested back in October, but since then, health officials have seen the product available at one store. Furthermore, “two Citterio salame stick samples previously collected by the California Department of Public Health have tested positive for Salmonella,” according to the recall.

Public Health Alert for Salmonella in Salame Sticks

On October 29, 2021, the USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a Public Health Alert because Euro Foods produced salame sticks that may be contaminated with Salmonella. No recall was requested because the product is no longer available for purchase.

The recall involves the following product:

  • 2-oz packages containing Citterio “Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks ALL NATURAL” with “best by” dates up to January 23, 2022, located next to the barcode.

Citterio Salami Sticks Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In October 2021, Citterio Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks were linked to a Salmonella outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Citterio salami sticks were sold at Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and possibly other retailers. The outbreak is particularly concerning because most of the victims are under 18 years old.

Nationwide Warning Issued After 3 People Hospitalized in Minnesota

One day before the CDC issued a nationwide warning, the Minnesota Department of Health warned consumers not to eat Citterio Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks after 3 people in Minnesota were hospitalized in September 2021. All three people reported eating Citterio Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks purchased at different Trader Joe’s locations in Minnesota.

Trader Joe’s has voluntarily stopped selling this product in its stores nationwide until we learn more.
