2025 UPDATE: Cucumbers Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

In May 2025, health officials linked yet another outbreak of Salmonella to cucumbers that were grown on farms in Florida by Bedner Grower, and distributed by Fresh Start Produce.

The cucumbers were sent to cruise ships, grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, and other locations in many states.

7 People on Got Salmonella on Cruise Ships

The 2025 cucumber Salmonella outbreak has sickened as least 26 people in 15 states since April 2025, including 9 people who were hospitalized and 7 people who ate cucumbers on cruise ships that left from ports in Florida in March and April 2025.

What Happened?

Health officials have confirmed that 26 people got sick with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Montevideo in 15 states, including: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia — but the true number of illnesses is likely higher, and it may not be limited to the states above.

Cruise Ships Linked to 7 Illnesses From Cucumbers

Cucumbers that were served on cruise ships that left from ports in Florida in March and April 2025 have been linked to 7 illnesses with Salmonella.

According to the CDC Outbreak Investigation on May 25, 2025:

“Seven sick people reported taking a cruise during the seven days prior to becoming sick, all departing from locations in Florida. Sick people were aboard 5 different cruise ships that departed the United States between March 30 and April 12. Illnesses started on dates ranging from April 2, 2025, to April 28, 2025.”

Bedner Growers Linked to Salmonella Outbreak in 2024

Bedner Growers is the same farm that was linked to a previous Salmonella outbreak in 2024, along with another farm in Florida (Thomas Produce Company, in Boca Raton, Florida).

At least 551 people in 34 states got sick in that outbreak, including 155 people who were hospitalized due to severe food poisoning, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation posted in June 2024.

Cucumbers From Mexico Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

In late 2024, yet another Salmonella outbreak was linked to cucumbers. These cucumbers were grown in Mexico and distributed in the U.S. as whole vegetables, or cut up and used as ingredients in foods such as wraps and salads, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation in December 2024.

FDA Finds Salmonella in Soil and Water At Bedner Growers

After the previous outbreak in 2024, FDA inspectors discovered multiple other strains of Salmonella in both the soil and water on Bedner Farms and Thomas Produce Company farms in Florida:

“Additional types of Salmonella were detected in both soil and water samples collected at both Bedner Growers, Inc. and Thomas Produce Company.”

In early 2025, FDA tests confirmed that Bedner Growers cucumbers were contaminated with the same strain of Salmonella that was making people sick in the current outbreak (April-May 2025).

What Should I Do?

In the FDA Outbreak Advisory in May 2025, the FDA urged people who ate these recalled cucumbers about symptoms of Salmonella, such as:

“Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that is contaminated with Salmonella, and the symptoms usually last four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. Children younger than five, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have severe infections.”
