July 20, 2023 — Nearly 350,000 CUPKIN Stainless-Steel Cups for Kids were recalled due to a risk of toxic lead poisoning.
The recall involves 8-oz. and 12-oz. models on CUPKIN Double-Walled Stainless Steel Children’s Cups, which were advertised as “lead free.” They were sold in pairs in many colors, available on Amazon.com and Cupkin.com from January 2018 to March 2023.
CUPKIN announced the recall after an independent investigation by Lead Safe Mama announced back in January 2023 that the “sealing dot” was 50% lead.
The dot is located on the bottom of the cups and it creates the vacuum seal. It does not directly come in contact with any liquids in the cup and is covered by paint, but there is a risk of lead exposure if the cup bottoms are mistreated and the paint wears off.
Lead is a heavy metal that is toxic if ingested, even in tiny amounts. Children who are exposed to lead may suffer from health problems, including lower IQ, learning delays, behavior issues, and more.
