September 11, 2015 — After receiving 12 reports of injury, Cybex International is recalling approximately 4,400 bicep arm curl machines.
The machines are designed with a seat, adjustable weights, and a swivel handle that users grasp and curl towards their body. The problem is that the handle can suddenly break off from the frame, causing a user to hit themselves in the face or head with the broken handle.
At least 108 incidents have occurred, including one person who lost sight in one eye after using the machine.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns consumers to immediately stop using the machines and contact Cybex for a free repair kit.
Cybex has provided a full list of recalled serial numbers on its website www.cybexintl.com. The following models are included in the recall:
- VR2 Arm Curl
- VR2TA Arm Curl
- Eagle Arm Curl
- VR3 Arm Curl
The machines were sold to gyms between November 1996 and October 2008. Each machine cost approximately $3,700-4,200 and was manufactured in the United States.
