UPDATE: January 2022 — Dole Recalls Salads AGAIN for Listeria Risk

On January 7, 2022, Dole issued yet another massive recall for salads that may be contaminated with deadly Listeria bacteria. The salads are linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria with at least 17 illnesses reported in 13 states, including 2 deaths.

The recall involves pre-packaged salads that were processed at two facilities (Springfield, OH and Soledad, CA). Dole issued the recall after finding Listeria bacteria on equipment for harvesting iceberg lettuce.

The recalled salads were sold in dozens of states at Kroger, Walmart, HEB, ALDI, and other major grocery stores under these brand-names:

  • Ahold
  • Dole
  • HEB
  • Kroger
  • Lidl
  • Little Salad Bar
  • Marketside (Walmart)
  • Naturally Better
  • Nature’s Promise
  • President’s Choice
  • Simply Nature

December 2021: Dole Salads Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak

In December 2021, Dole recalled all salads from its facilities in Bessemer City, North Carolina, and Yuma, Arizona due to a deadly outbreak of Listeria.

From August 2014 through October 2021, there were at least 17 people who developed infections with the outbreak strain of Listeria in 13 states. Thirteen of those people were hospitalized due to severe illnesses, and 2 people died, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

October 2021: Dole Recalls Garden Salad for Listeria Risk

In October 2021, Dole Fresh Vegetables issued a recall for 4 brand-names of Garden Salads due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.

The recall was “precautionary” because the salads all have “Best If Used By” dates of October 25, 2021, which means they should no longer be on store shelves. The recall involves the following products:

  • Dole™ Garden Salad (24-oz)
  • Marketside™ Classic Salad (24-oz)
  • Kroger™ Garden Salad (12-oz)
  • Salad Classics™ Garden Salad (12 oz)

They were distributed to stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

No illnesses were reported. The salads were recalled after a single sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes in a random test by the Department of Agriculture in Georgia, according to Dole.
