Walmart Salad Recalled for Toxic Nightshade Mix-Up

In June 2022, Walmart’s Marketside Sping Mix salad was recalled in 4 states because it may contain hairy nightshade, a poisonous plant. The recall involves two products from Walmart stores in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Tennessee, according to the FDA Enforcement Report:

  • 11 oz. Marketside Spring Mix: W167011 with BIUB: 6/30/2022
  • 5 oz. Marketside Spring Mix: W16709A and W16709B with BIUB: 6/29/2022

2022 UPDATE: Dole Recalls More Salads From Walmart for Listeria

In January 2022, Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. recalled dozens of types of Marketside® salads that were sold at Walmart stores because they contain iceberg lettuce they may be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.

The salads are linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria illnesses, with at least 17 illnesses reported in 13 states, including 2 people who died, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

The recall involves the following products:

2021 Walmart Salad Recall: Dole Salads Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak

In December 2021, Dole recalled a variety of salads (including Marketside® salads from Walmart) after they were linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria. The recall involved all salads that were processed at Dole’s facilities in North Carolina and Arizona.

The recalled salads were labeled with with “Best if used by” dates from 11/30/21 through 01/08/22. The Product lot code begins with the letter “N” or “Y” in the upper right-hand corner of the package.

Romaine Lettuce From Walmart Linked to E. coli Outbreak

In November 2020, Tanimura & Antle Romaine Lettuce was recalled after a bag from a Walmart in Michigan tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7, the same strain that sickened 2 people in Michigan.

The recalled romaine lettuce was sold at Walmart and possibly other stores in 19 states and Puerto Rico. It came in a clear plastic zip-top bag, UPC 0-27918-20314-9, and a white sticker indicating it was packed in Salinas, California on 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020.

Walmart Recalls Bagged Salads After Parasite Infects Hundreds of People

In June 2020, more than 100 types of bagged salads were recalled after hundreds of people were infected with Cyclopora parasites.

The salads were produced by Fresh Express in Streamwood, Illinois. They contain iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrot ingredients.

Fresh Express recalled salads under a variety of brand-names. They were sold at Walmart, Giant Eagle, ALDI, Jewel-Osco, and Hy-Vee in the Midwest, East Coast, and Southern U.S.

Walmart Expands Salad Recall for Cyclospora Risk

On June 27, Fresh Express expanded a recall for Marketside® bagged salads.

The salads were sold at Walmart stores in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The expanded recall involves the following Walmart salads:

  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Asian
  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Avocado Ranch
  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Cherry Almond Gorgonzola
  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Kale Pecan Cranberry
  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Southwest
  • Marketside Chopped Salad Kit Sunflower Bacon Crunch
  • Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad
  • Marketside Crisp Greens
  • Marketside Kale Slaw
  • Marketside Premium Romaine Salad
  • Marketside Shredded Iceberg Lettuce
  • Marketside Tri-Color Cole Slaw

Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad Recall

On June 25, Fresh Express recalled Marketside® Classic Iceberg Salad from Walmart stores due to a risk of Cyclospora parasite infections.

The recalled salad was sold in 12-ounce and 24-ounce bags with “best-if-used-by” dates of May 19 to July 04. The salad was distributed to Walmart stores between June 1 and June 21 in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Cyclospora Food Poisoning

Cyclospora is a parasite that causes an intestinal infection in people who eat contaminated food or water, usually within 7 days. The most common symptom is diarrhea, with frequent watery bowel movements. The diarrhea may persist for months without treatment.

Symptoms of Cyclospora Infection

  • Watery diarrhea (most common)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Increased gas
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Low-grade fever
