Cake Mix Salmonella Outbreak

Five reports of Salmonella illnesses are under investigation by the CDC and FDA. All 5 people were infected with the same strain of Salmonella Agbeni that was found in Duncan Hines® Classic White cake mix. Several people ate cake mix before becoming ill, and some of the people said they may have eaten uncooked cake batter.

What Products Were Recalled?

The recall involves about 2.4 million boxes of cake mix that were manufactured at the same time as the box that tested positive for Salmonella. The cake mixes covered by this recall were distributed for retail sale in the U.S. and limited international exports.

Cake Batter Can Make You Sick

The FDA is reminding consumers never to eat raw cake batter. The problem is that cake mixes and batter contain ingredients like eggs or flour that can be contaminated with bacteria, such as Salmonella, that are rendered harmless by baking.

“Consumers are reminded to wash their hands, work surfaces, and utensils thoroughly after contact with raw batter products, to follow baking instructions, and to never eat raw batter.”

Salmonella Food Poisoning

Most people who are infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Children are the most likely to become infected with Salmonella.
