What Happened?
The CDC, FDA, and state health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections that has been traced to shell eggs.
The eggs were recalled on July 22, 2026, by Midwest Poultry Services, L.P., after the company identified possible Salmonella Enteritidis contamination on two of its Texas farms.
Two days later, on July 24, 2026, the CDC confirmed the outbreak had grown to 98 illnesses in 17 states, with 26 people hospitalized.
How Many People Were Hospitalized?
Of the 98 confirmed illnesses, 26 people had to be hospitalized. That hospitalization rate is a signal of how serious this outbreak has become for the people affected, even though no deaths have been reported as of the CDC’s latest update.
The CDC has not closed its investigation, which means both the illness count and the hospitalization count could still rise as more cases are confirmed.
What Are the Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning?
According to the CDC, anyone experiencing the following symptoms should call a healthcare provider right away:
- Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
- Diarrhea for more than 2 days that is not improving
- Bloody diarrhea
- So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as not urinating much, a dry mouth and throat, or feeling dizzy when standing
Most healthy people recover with fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps that resolve on their own. Children younger than 5, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face a much higher risk of a severe infection requiring hospitalization, which lines up with the 26 hospitalizations already confirmed in this outbreak.
Which Eggs Were Recalled?
Midwest Poultry Services recalled 1,589,577 dozen shell eggs, more than 19 million eggs, sold under these brands:
- Kroger, Large through Jumbo
- Simple Truth Cage Free Brown, Medium and Large
- Brookshire’s, Large through Jumbo
- Country Morning, Medium through Jumbo
- Sunups, Medium
- Bulk Grade A and Grade AA cartons
Only cartons marked with plant code P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian date between 157 and 184 are affected, with sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and August 17, 2026.
Where Were the Eggs Sold?
The eggs were shipped to foodservice and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, and were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, at Brookshire Grocery stores across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi, and at other smaller retailers. The CDC’s confirmed cases now span 17 states, a broader footprint than the original distribution list, which is common as an outbreak investigation matures and more patients are interviewed.
