August 20, 2024 — Gutierrez Distributor has recalled El Servidor Corp Ground Cinnamon due to a risk of lead poisoning.
The recall involves El Servidor Corp Ground Cinnamon spice products that were distributed to retail stores in New York starting on January 14, 2024. The product was sold in 1.5-oz. clear plastic bags.
The elevated levels of lead contamination were discovered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.
Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can cause long-term health problems, especially for children and infants. There is no safe level of lead.
According to the recall, short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not produce any symptoms. The only sign may be increased levels of lead in a blood test.
Higher levels of lead exposure, or long-term exposure to lead, may produce symptoms in nearly every bodily system. The effects depend on the age of the child and body weight:
“If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time (e.g., weeks to months) permanent damage to the central nervous system may occur. This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems.”
