Safety Warning After Evercross Hoverboard Fire Damages NYC Apartment Building
In March 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to immediately stop using EVERCROSS EV5 Hoverboards that were sold by Amazon and other websites because the battery can catch on fire, which poses a risk of severe injuries, death, or property damage.
What Happened?
According to the CPSC, the EV5 Hoverboard was linked to “one report of a fire, resulting in substantial property damage to a residential building in New York City.” The hoverboard fire occurred in May 2023.
No injuries were reported, but other hoverboard fires have been linked to deadly house fires and severe burn injuries. These fires are often typically caused by lithium-ion batteries that malfunction or overheat.
Chinese Manufacturer Refuses to Recall Hoverboards
Evercross has not agreed to recall these hoverboards or offer a remedy to consumers, according to the CPSC. The hoverboards were manufactured in China by Jinhua Smart Electric Technology Co. Ltd.
Because the manufacturer has not issued a recall, the CPSC is urging consumers to immediately remove the battery packs from the hoverboards and dispose of them according to local hazardous waste laws.
How To Identify EVERCROSS Hoverboards
The safety warning involves EVERCROSS EV5 hoverboards, which are black, blue or pink. The name “EVERCROSS” is printed on the front of the hoverboards.
They were sold online on Amazon.com, eBay.com, Likesporting.com, Lowes.com, Newegg.com, Ridefaboard.com and Walmart.com for between $180 and $300 from July 2021 to the present.
