February 20, 2024 — Target has agreed to join in a $38.5 million settlement with the family of two young girls who died in a house fire when a hoverboard caught on fire.
The lawsuit was filed by Damien and Jennifer L. K., the parents of two young girls who died when a defective hoverboard from Target caught on fire while it was charging.
The tragic incident led to a recall for about 53,000 Jetson Rogue 42-Volt Hoverboards in March 2023. There were reports of the hoverboards catching on fire, smoking, burning, sparking, and melting, according to the recall.
The lawsuit claimed that Target and the hoverboard manufacturer, Jetson Electric Bikes LLC, were aware of the risks of injury associated with the hoverboard, but “proceeded to market and sell the Jetson Rogue Hoverboard anyway” without adequately warning consumers.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Leeson Jr. signed off on the settlement, which provides 60% of the payout — or $22.9 million — to the parents of the two girls who died.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania — Case Number 22-cv-3765.
