4.9 Million Bottles of Fabuloso Recalled for Infection Risk

In February 2023, Colgate-Palmolive recalled about 4.9 million bottles of Fabuloso® Multi-Purpose Cleaner because they may be contaminated with dangerous bacteria that could cause a life-threatening infection.

What is the Problem?

The recalled bottles of Fabuloso were made with “inadequate” amounts of a preservative that would limit bacterial growth, according to the manufacturer, so they might contain dangerous bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

What is the Risk?

The risk is that Fabuloso may contain Pseudomonas bacteria, including strains that are extremely dangerous because they are so antibiotic-resistant, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Pseudomonas fluorescens, which are found widely in soil and water.

While Pseudomonas bacteria normally pose little risk to healthy adults, they can be opportunistic. High-risk people include those with cancer, cystic fibrosis, burns, weakened immune systems, users of external medical devices, or people with underlying lung issues.

What Bottles of Fabuloso Were Recalled?

The recall involves bottles of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaners that were sold from December 2022 through January 2023 nationwide.

The recall does NOT include Fabuloso Antibacterial varieties or other Fabuloso products.

Fabuloso was sold by retailers like Amazon.com, Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar General, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, and many other websites and stores nationwide.

On the recalled products, the first 8 digits of the lot codes are 2348US78 through 2365US78 and 3001US78 through 3023US78.

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infections

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an extensively drug-resistant bacteria. This makes infections hard to treat because the normal antibiotics may not work well enough to kill the bacteria.

Treatment for Pseudomonas Infections

A severe infection may require weeks of antibiotics that must be given through an intravenous (IV) line in the hospital. In some cases, Pseudomonas bacteria spread to the bloodstream or other parts of the body, causing organ failure, sepsis, and death.
