UPDATE: 4 Deaths, 81 Infections Linked to Recalled Eye Drops
According to the CDC update on May 15, 2023, at least 81 people in 18 states (CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, IL, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, PA, SD, TX, UT, WA, WI) were infected with a highly antibiotic-resistant bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) after using eye drops. Four deaths were reported, as well as 14 people who lost their vision and another 4 people who had to have surgery to remove their infected eyeball.
Blind Woman Files Lawsuit Against Amazon.com
In May 2023, a lawsuit was filed by a woman who was blinded in her right eye after using EzriCare Artificial Tears that she purchased from Amazon.com in April 2022. She developed an infection that caused severe scarring in her eye, and by September 2022, she had completely lost her vision in her eye, according to the lawsuit. Click here to read more.

Another Lawsuit Filed by Woman Hospitalized With Eye Infection
In May 2023, a lawsuit was filed by a woman from Kentucky who had to be hospitalized in the ICU and undergo multiple surgeries due to a severe infection she developed after using EzriCare Artificial Tears. Global Pharma Recalls Eye Drops for Dangerous Bacteria
In February 2023, Global Pharma Healthcare of Tamil Nadu, India, announced a recall for all lots of EzriCare and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops due to bacteria contamination. On February 22, the recall was expanded to also include Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment.
EzriCare Artificial Tears Linked to Deadly Infection Outbreak
In January 2023, the CDC began investigating a deadly outbreak of infections that was linked to EzriCare Artifical Tears. The investigation was later expanded to also include Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma Eye Ointment.
What Should I Do?
Do not use Delsam Pharma or EzriCare Artificial Tears Lubricant Eye Drops (Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium, 10mg in 1mL) in ½ fl. oz (15mL) containers. The carton box is labeled with Ezricare NDC 79503-0101-15, UPC 3 79503 10115 7; Delsam Pharma’s NDC 72570-121-15, UPC -72570-0121-15.
What Are EzriCare Artificial Tears?
EzriCare Artificial Tears are preservative-free eye drops, which means they do not contain anything that would kill bacteria. They were sold at Walmart, other stores nationwide, and online.
EzriCare Eye Drops Test Positive for Pseudomonas Bacteria
Tests on 2 opened bottles from 2 different states were positive for a dangerous bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, according to the CDC. This bacteria is highly resistant to carbapenem antibiotics, as well as ceftazidime and cefepime. Until this outbreak, this dangerous and “extensively drug-resistant” bacteria had never been reported in the U.S.

After the outbreak was reported by the CDC, EzriCare LLC created a website at https://ezricare-info.com/ for information. The company said that EzriCare Artificial Tears is actually manufactured by Global Pharma Healthcare PVT Ltd.
What is Pseudomonas?
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a type of bacteria that is commonly found in the environment, like in soil and in water. It is a common cause of healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, and surgical site infections.
CDC: 2,700 Deaths Linked to Pseudomonas Infections in 2017
Pseudomonas is a serious problem in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, where outbreaks of this highly antibiotic-resistant “superbug” are becoming more and more common. In 2017, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa caused an estimated 32,600 infections among hospitalized patients and 2,700 estimated deaths in the U.S., according to the CDC.
