UPDATE: Deadly Pseudomonas Infections Linked to Artificial Tears

In February 2023, the CDC warned that a deadly outbreak of “extensively drug-resistant” Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections was linked to eye drops. As of May 15, at least 81 people in 18 states suffered eye infections, including 14 people who lost their vision or went blind. Four people died when the Pseudomonas infection spread to their bloodstream.

What is Pseudomonas Aeruginosa?

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a species of bacteria that is found widely in soil and water. These bacteria are highly resistant to antibiotics, which makes infections very difficult to treat and significantly increases the likelihood of deadly complications. Pseudomonas can also develop new resistance to antibiotics.

Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas Infections Killed 2,700 People in 2017

Pseudomonas infections are also a very serious problem in healthcare settings, where the bacteria can quickly spread to vulnerable patients. In 2017, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa caused an estimated 32,600 infections among hospitalized patients and 2,700 estimated deaths in the U.S., according to the 2019 AR Threats Report.

Who Is At Risk?

People with weakened immune systems or external medical devices who are exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment, according to the FDA.

The highest-risk people include those who are hospitalized with cancer, burns, cystic fibrosis, and underlying lung diseases. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria.

How Can Pseudomonas Get Into My Body?

Pseudomonas bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin. This bacteria can often be detected on hospital food, sinks, taps, mops, and respiratory equipment, and easily spread from patient to patient.

Symptoms of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Infection

Healthy people may be colonized by Pseudomonas bacteria without showing any symptoms at all. If symptoms do appear, they depend on what part of the body is infected. Pseudomonas can infect the blood, lungs, stomach, urinary tract, and more.

Here are some examples of symptoms:

  • Blood: Fever, chills, fatigue, joint pain and stiffness
  • Ears: Pain, itching, liquid discharge
  • Skin: Rash, which can include pimples with pus
  • Eyes: Pain, redness, swelling
  • Bones or joints: Joint pain and swelling, neck or back pain that lasts weeks
  • Wounds: Green pus or discharge that may have a sweet, fruity smell
  • Digestive tract: Headache, diarrhea
  • Lungs: Coughing, pneumonia, congestion
  • Urinary: Urinary tract infections
