Ford Explorer Recalled Again for Rear Suspension Defect

In November 2020, Ford issued yet another recall for more than 350,000 Ford Explorer SUVs (2013-2017) to fix a rear suspension defect linked to 13 crashes and 6 injuries.

What is the Problem?

The rear suspension toe link can fracture, which may cause driver to lose significant steering control and crash. The toe link is responsible for keeping the rear suspension stable, which keeps the tires on the ground.

Why Were They Recalled Again?

Ford recalled 2013-2017 Explorer SUVs in November 2020 after some drivers in North America and parts of Canada (where corrosion is common due to salt and winter weather) “experienced a fracture of the outboard section of the rear suspension toe link after completion of a prior safety recall repair.”

Previous Ford Explorer Recalls for Suspension Problems

Ford has issued at least 2 previous recalls for Ford Explorers with defective rear suspension toe links that can fracture. Ford has also recalled other vehicles due to the same problem.

Rear Suspension Toe Links May Fracture

In June 2017, Ford recalled 1.2 million Explorer SUVs (2011-2017 model-year) after a report of a rear suspension toe link fracturing. No injuries were reported, but the driver lost control and hit a curb. Ford blamed the problem on “frequent full rear suspension articulation (jounce and rebound)” and replaced the toe links.

Rear Suspension Toe Link May Be Improperly Welded

In May 2016, Ford also recalled 75,000 Explorer SUVs (2014-2015 model-year) because the rear suspension toe links may not have been welded properly and they could potentially fracture.

Ford Recalls More Vehicles for Suspension Problems

In February 2020, problems with rear suspension toe link fracturing resulted in Ford recalling the 2013-2018 Ford Flex, Ford Taurus Police Interceptor, Ford Taurus SHO, and Lincoln MKT.
