What is the Problem?
Abbott Diabetes Care is warning diabetic patients and their loved ones about a life-threatening sensor issue on about 3 million FreeStyle Libre 3 glucose monitors that may produce incorrect low readings.
What is the FreeStyle Libre 3 System?
The FreeStyle Libre 3 system is a Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system that includes a sensor and a smartphone app. The sensor is a small white disc that is goes on the back of the patient’s arm, where it collects glucose readings and sends them to the app.
What is the Problem?
In November 2025, Abbott warned that incorrect low glucose readings on a FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor can pose serious health risks, including severe injury or death:
“If undetected, incorrect low glucose readings over an extended period may lead to wrong treatment decisions for people living with diabetes, such as excessive carbohydrate intake or skipping or delaying insulin doses.”
What Should I Do?
People living with diabetes or caregivers should be aware of issues with incorrect glucose readings (both high and low). If symptoms or expectations don’t match the readings, use a blood glucose meter or the built-in meter on a FreeStyle Libre 3 to make treatment decisions.
FDA Reports 7 Deaths, Over 700 Serious Injuries
