June 4, 2024 — Fresh whole cucumbers were recalled in 14 states after a positive test for Salmonella, according to the FDA.
The cucumber recall was announced by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc., a company based in Delray, Florida.
The fresh whole cucumbers were shipped in bulk cartons to distributors, wholesalers, and food service distributors in 14 states between May 17, 2024 and May 21, 2024.
Those states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The recalled cucumbers are unlabeled and were sold in bulk. They are dark green, approximately 5-9 inches long, and 1.5-2 inches in diameter. The recall does not involve English or mini cucumbers.
The recall was initiated after a cucumber sample tested positive for Salmonella, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
The FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if the cucumber that tested positive for Salmonella is connected to an outbreak of unknown origin involving the Salmonella Africana strain. At least 141 illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA Active Investigations List.
