As of May 30, 2025, the CDC Outbreak Investigation has linked cucumbers from Bedner Growers to 45 illnesses in 18 states between March and April 2025, including 16 people who were hospitalized.

Cucumbers Test Positive for Outbreak Strain of Salmonella
In May 2025, FDA found the outbreak strain of Salmonella in a sample of cucumbers from Bedner Growers that were collected at a distribution center in Pennsylvania. This same batch of cucumbers also tested positive for other strains of Salmonella. The FDA is investigating if other illness outbreaks are linked to the cucumbers.
What is Making People Sick?
The 2025 Bedner Growers cucumber outbreak involves a strain called Salmonella Montevideo, but other strains of Salmonella have also been detected on cucumbers that were recalled by Bedner Growers in May 2025.
2024 Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Bedner Growers Cucumbers
Cucumbers from Bedner Growers were linked to another Salmonella outbreak in 2024 that infected 551 people in 34 states, including 155 people who were hospitalized.
The outbreak strain of Salmonella Africana was linked to Bedner Growers farms in Boynton Beach, Florida, and another farm in Florida called Thomas Produce Company, located in Boca Raton.
Many more illnesses were likely never reported, according to the CDC Outbreak Investigation in June 2024: “The true number of sick people in this outbreak was likely much higher than the number reported, and this outbreak may not have been limited to the states with known illnesses.”
Tests Find Salmonella in Soil and Water at Bedner Growers
In 2024, multiple strains of Salmonella were detected at Bedner Growers when the FDA tested soil and water on the farms where the cucumbers grown. Health officials tested the soil and water after a previous outbreak of Salmonella infected at least 551 people.
In December 2024, an unrelated outbreak of Salmonella was also linked to cucumbers that were grown in Mexico and sold in the U.S. as whole vegetables or ingredients in other foods, according to the CDC Investigation.
Bedner Growers Recalls Cucumbers for Salmonella
On May 19, 2025, Bedner Growers issued a recall for cucumbers that were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella. Fresh Start Produce Sales distributed the cucumbers between April 29, 2025 and May 19, 2025.
These cucumbers were sent to a variety of locations, including cruise ships, hospitals, restaurants, grocery stores, and other companies who re-packaged the cucumbers or used them as ingredients in other foods (for example: sushi, salads, vegetable trays, sandwiches, etc.).
Who Sold Cucumbers From Bedner Growers?
The recall by Bedner Growers has led to a chain-reaction of cucumber recalls by other companies, such as Target, Walmart, Ukrop’s, Big Y Foods, Weis, Isabelle’s Kitchen, and many other retailers.
Safety officials are warning people to throw out any cucumbers with an unknown source. According to the CDC:
“If you have any whole cucumbers in your home and can’t tell where they are from, throw them out.”
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. People who eat food that is contaminated with Salmonella usually start to experience symptoms within 72 hours, but it can take longer.
The symptoms usually last 4 to 7 days, according to the FDA. Healthy adults usually recover without needing medical treatment, but the infection can be life-threatening or deadly. According to the FDA:
