GE Recalls 155,000 Refrigerators After 37 Injuries Reported
In April 2022, GE Appliances recalled about 155,000 GE® Free-Standing French Door Refrigerators in Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel after 37 people were injured when the freezer handle broke off.
How Many People Were Injured?
GE issued the recall after 71 reports of the freezer drawer handle detaching when a consumer tried to open it, resulting in 37 injuries, including three “serious fall injuries.”
What is the Problem?
GE warned that an improperly installed freezer handle can become loose. “A loose handle could detach when the consumer is pulling on it to open the freezer, creating a fall risk,” according to the GE recall website.
What Should I Do?
GE said that consumers can still use the refrigerators. “If the handle is loose, a consumer can open the freezer by gripping the edge of the freezer door where the flexible rubber sealing gasket meets the metal freezer door,” GE said.
Was My Refrigerator Recalled?
GE refrigerators were sold nationwide at The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy and other stores from February 2020 through January 2022 for between $1,900 and $2,500, depending on the model.
The recall involves 6 model numbers, including:

The serial numbers for the affected models begin with one of the following two letter combinations: DR, FR, GR, HR, LR, MR, RR, SR, TR, VR, ZR, AS, DS, FS, GS, HS, LS, MS.
