Goalsetter Basketball Hoops Recalled After Death of Teenage Boy

In December 2022, about 18,000 Goalsetter wall-mounted basketball hoops were recalled because they can detach from the wall and fall to the ground, posing a risk of serious impact injuries or death.

What Happened?

The basketball hoops were recalled after the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy who was hit and killed when a Goalsetter wall-mounted basketball goal fell on him at home in Granger, Indiana, in June 2018.

According to the family, he was struck in his head, abdomen, and legs by the falling backboard while he was teaching one of his little sisters how to play basketball at an indoor court in family home.

How Many People Were Injured?

In total, Goalsetter said it received 4 reports of the wall-mounted basketball goal detaching from a wall, including the boy’s death. In one of the other incidents, a consumer sustained severe facial injuries. In another incident, a consumer sustained a fractured leg.

Lawsuit Filed Against Goalsetter by Family of Boy Who Died

The family of the 14-year-old boy who died has filed a lawsuit against Goalsetter for failing to supply the necessary instructions and hardware to safely mount the recalled basketball hoops to a wall.

The backboard, hoop, and mounting system weighed about 260 pounds, according to the lawsuit. Yet it was installed using only 6 two-inch lag screws which went into drywall and particle board.

The family also accused Goalsetter of waiting more than 4 years (and after another tragic incident occurred) to recognize the danger posed by their wall-mounted basketball goals and issue a recall.

The lawsuit also names Dick’s Sporting Goods and two local contractors. The expected trial date for the lawsuit is in October 2023, unless a settlement can be reached beforehand.

What Basketball Hoops Were Recalled?

The recall involves all Goalsetter Adjustable and Fixed Wall-Mount Series and GS Baseline Series 72-inch, 60-inch, 54-inch, and 48-inch wall-mounted goal systems.

The basketball goals have a white Goalsetter logo (a white basketball to the left of the word “Goalsetter” printed in the lower left corner of the backboard).

They were sold at SCHEELS stores and basketball equipment stores nationwide and online from November 1999 through June 2022 for between $919 and $2,250.
