April 4, 2023 — Raw flour and dough has been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella in at least 11 states.
Many people do not realize that flour is usually a raw food that has not been heat-treated to kill germs like Salmonella or E. coli.
Since December 2022, at least 12 people have been infected with Salmonella after eating or touching raw flour, batter, or dough, according to an outbreak investigation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Three people were hospitalized due to a severe illness, but no deaths were reported. The CDC said that the true number of sick people is likely much higher than what health officials have confirmed.
Furthermore, investigators are still working to determine what specific brands of flour are causing the outbreak. No recalls have been issued.
Until then, the CDC is reminding consumers that raw flour can make you sick:
“Do not eat raw dough or batter – even a small amount can make you or your child sick. Children can get sick from handling or eating raw dough used for crafts or play clay.”
The symptoms of an infection with Salmonella may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps that last for 4 to 7 days. Children, elderly adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems are more likely to develop dehydration or severe, life-threatening complications.
