July 28, 2022 — Goodman Manufacturing Company re-announced a recall for more than 300,000 evaporator coil drain pans in the U.S. and Canada after dozens of fires were reported.
The manufacturer said it has received 26 reports of fires involving the recalled evaporator coil drain pans, including 3 reports of fires since the recall was previously announced in November 2021.
According to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
“Several of these incidents have resulted in significant fire and smoke damage to residences. No injuries have been reported.”
The problem is that the molded plastic drain pan located at the bottom of the evaporator coil can overheat, melt, and deform, posing a fire hazard. The hazard occurs when the drain pan is installed with a residential condensing gas furnace in an up-flow configuration.
They were sold nationwide from January 2019 through November 2021 for between $200 and $1,200 per unit.
