Gourmia Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed in Michigan
In July 2022, a lawsuit was filed by woman who claims that she was severely burned when her Gourmia Pressure Cooker exploded.
The lawsuit was filed by Ashley G., a woman from Southfield, Michigan, who claims she was burned by a “dangerously defective” Gourmia Pressure Cooker (Model #GPC855) in August 2020.
The lawsuit accuses the manufacturer of misleading her about the safety features — specifically a locking lid, which failed to lock and prevent her from easily opening it when the unit was pressurized.
Opening her pressure cooker when there was still pressure inside the unit caused “its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker” and all over her body, causing severe burn injuries.
Her lawsuit cites misleading claims in the Owner’s Manual, such as: “The lid cannot be opened until the pressure is fully released – do not attempt to force it open.”
Furthermore, the Gourmia website claims that it has a “SAFETY LOCK SYSTEM: Patented 12-level lid safety lock system ensures safety while pressure cooker is in-use.”
The Gourmia Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed against The Steelstone Group LLC on July 14, 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Southern Division) — Case No. 5:22-cv-11596-JEL-JJCG.
What is the Problem?
Pressure cookers trap and seal in the steam to cook food more quickly and at higher temperatures. These benefits can also pose serious risks, especially when the lid explodes off the pot and spews extremely hot steam, food, and liquid in every direction. Anyone nearby can instantly suffer massive scalds or 3rd-degree burn injuries.
Are Pressure Cookers Safe?
The risk of explosions and burns is why pressure cookers were not very popular kitchen appliances in the U.S. until recently. That all changed in 2016 with the Instant Pot craze. People loved the locking lid, which was advertised to keep them safe and prevent explosions.
In recent years, dozens of similar products have hit the market. Millions of people have purchased electronic pressure cookers that are advertised with “safety features,” most commonly a locking lid.
Hundreds of Pressure Cooker Lawsuits Filed Nationwide
The problem is that these “locking” lids do not always lock. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed by people who were seriously burned by pressure cookers, including the Instant Pot, Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL, Crock-Pot Multi Cookers, and many other models.
