Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed After Burn Injuries Reported

In March 2026, a lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado against Amazon.com, Inc. alleging that the Instant Pot Duo 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker (specifically the Duo 60 V3 model) is defectively designed because its lid can be rotated and removed while the unit is still under pressure.

What Happened?

The complaint alleges that when the lid is removed while the cooker is still pressurized, the trapped pressure can forcefully eject scalding hot contents from the unit and onto nearby consumers. The plaintiff alleges suffering serious burn injuries on or about April 7, 2024, while using the pressure cooker for its normal, intended purpose of cooking food.

Instant Brands, Inc., the manufacturer of the Instant Pot, is currently in bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. Under Colorado law, Amazon is therefore deemed to be the product’s manufacturer for purposes of this litigation.

The Amazon Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed on March 20, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado – Case Number 1:26-cv-011460RBJ.

What Is the Problem?

The Instant Pot Duo is marketed as having multiple safety mechanisms, including a Float Valve that the user manual describes as locking the lid in place while the unit is pressurized. The manual states that until the float valve drops down, the lid cannot be opened.

The lawsuit alleges that despite this claimed safety feature, the lid of the Instant Pot Duo 60 V3 can be rotated and removed with normal force while the unit remains pressurized, which can create a burn hazard.

When this occurs, the pressure trapped inside the cooker can cause hot food, steam, and liquid to be violently ejected from the unit.

The complaint further alleges that economical, safer alternative designs existed that could have prevented the lid from opening while the cooker was still pressurized, and that Amazon knew or should have known of this defect but continued to sell the product without a redesign or adequate warning.

How Many People Were Burned?

Pressure cooker burn injuries can be severe. When a pressurized cooker opens unexpectedly, the sudden release of steam and scalding hot contents can cause serious burn injuries to the face, hands, arms, and chest.

The lawsuit filed against Amazon seeks damages for bodily injuries, medical expenses, lost wages, physical pain, mental anguish, and diminished enjoyment of life. If you experienced a similar incident with an Instant Pot pressure cooker, you may have legal options as well.

How to Identify the Affected Pressure Cooker

  • Product: Instant Pot DUO 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker
  • Model: Duo 60 V3 (specifically identified in the complaint; other Duo models may be affected)
  • Sold by: Amazon.com and other retailers
  • Distributed by: Instant Pot Brands, 8725 W Higgins Road, Suite 725, Chicago, IL 60631

If your pressure cooker matches the above description and you were burned when the lid opened while the unit was still pressurized, you should preserve the cooker and any documentation related to your purchase and injury, and contact a lawyer as soon as possible.

What Should I Do?

If you were burned by an Instant Pot pressure cooker and believe the lid opened while the unit was still under pressure, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your legal rights.

  • Preserve the pressure cooker and do not return, repair, or discard it. The physical product may be important evidence in any legal claim.
  • Photograph your injuries and the product as soon as possible.
  • Seek medical treatment and keep copies of all medical records and bills related to your injury.
  • Document the circumstances of the incident, including how you were using the cooker, what setting it was on, and what happened immediately before the lid came open.
  • Contact a product liability lawyer to discuss whether you may have a claim.
