Helados Mexico Ice Cream Recalled for Salmonella Risk
In April 2024, Tropicale Foods recalled certain boxes of Helados Mexico Mini Ice Cream Variety Packs due to a risk of food poisoning with Salmonella bacteria.
What Happened?
Finished product tests on the mango bars were positive for Salmonella, according to the recall notice. The manufacturer has stopped distribution of the product while they investigate what caused the Salmonella contamination.
What is the Risk?
No illnesses were reported as of April 2024, but infections with Salmonella can cause severe food poisoning. Healthy people often develop symptoms such as a fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, Salmonella can spread to the bloodstream and cause severe complications such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, dehydration, or death.
How To Identify Recalled Ice Cream
The recall involves 5,224 units of Helados Mexico Mini Ice Cream Variety Packs with a best-by date of “MO Best By 10/11/2025,” which can be found printed on the bottom of the box.
These products were distributed at retail locations in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virgina, Wisconsin, West Virgina, Washington, DC, and certain locations in Europe.
