All Honey Smacks Cereal Recalled

In July 2018, the FDA reminded consumers that ALL Honey Smacks cereal was recalled with a “best if used by” date of June 14, 2019 or earlier. The agency is aware that some stores are illegally continuing to sell the recalled cereal.

Honey Smacks Recalled for Salmonella

June 14, 2018 — Kellogg Company recalled 15.3-oz. and 23-oz. boxes of Kellogg’s® Honey Smacks® cereal because it could be contaminated with Salmonella.

How Many People Are Sick?

The CDC reports that 135 people in 36 states have become ill with Salmonella. There have been 34 hospitalizations and no deaths. The illnesses started on dates ranging from March 3, 2018 to May 28, 2018.

The products were shipped to the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the Caribbean, Guam, Tahiti and Saipan.

What is the problem?

Kellogg announced the recall voluntarily after being notified of Salmonella illnesses by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Timeline of Events

  • On May 17, 2018 the FDA learned about a cluster of Salmonella Mbandaka illnesses in multiple states.
  • Interviews with ill people identified Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal as a possible source of the illnesses.
  • On June 14, 2018, The Kellogg Company voluntarily recalled Honey Smacks cereal. The FDA began testing for Salmonella in the manufacturer’s facility.
  • On June 15, 2018 the FDA warned consumers not to eat the recalled cereal, and discard recalled Kellogg’s Honey Smacks cereal.
  • As of September 26, 2018, the outbreak investigation is over.

What Should I Do?

Kellogg is asking anyone who bought the recalled Honey Smacks cereal to throw it away and contact the company for a full refund. Salmonella Food Poisoning
