HSN Samurai Smoke Alarm Recall
In January 2025, the home-shopping network HSN announced a recall for about 328,000 Samurai Smoke Alarms that can fail to alert during a fire.
What is the Problem?
The recalled smoke alarms can malfunction and fail to alert when there is a fire, which poses “a risk of smoke inhalation or death,” according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
No injuries were reported, but a defective smoke alarm that fails could result in a fire spreading and causing severe injuries or death to anyone trapped in the home, building, or asleep when the fire starts.
The manufacturer, Three61, said it received 8 reports of the alarms failing to alert when there was smoke.
What Happened?
The recall was announced after federal safety officials conducted smoke sensitivity tests on the HSN Samurai Smoke Alarms.
One of the smoke detectors failed the test because it did not alert when it was exposed to pre-determined concentrations of smoke.
How To Identify Recalled Smoke Alarms
HSN recalled about 328,000 Samurai Mini Smoke Alarms (model number SM1. These smoke alarms measure only about 2.5″x2.5″x2.5″ inches, which is much smaller than a typical smoke alarm.
These smoke alarms also came with lithium-ion batteries, adhesive stickers, screws, mounting plates and an instruction manual. The word “Smoke” is printed on the front of the alarm under a button.
When Were The Smoke Alarms Sold on HSN?
The smoke alarms were sold exclusively at HSN in packages of 1, 2, or 3 units. Some smoke alarms were also sold with a carbon monoxide detector. The carbon monoxide detector was not recalled.
They were sold nationwide through HSN and online at HSN.com from July 2020 through November 2024 for between $40 and $50.
What Should I Do?
HSN is urging customers to immediately stop using the recalled smoke alarms and visit the recall website at: https://www.samuraibrands.com/recall. The website also has a form where you can register to get a free replacement smoke alarm.
Customers should immediately install the replacement smoke alarm “as soon as you receive it,” according to the recall.
