July 15, 2016 — IKEA has issued a recall for about 80,000 baby gates because the lock can open unexpectedly.
The IKEA recall involves Patrull FAST and KLÄMMA safety gates and gate extensions. They were sold from August 1995 through June 2016 for $10-60.
There have been several reports of children falling down stairs when the gates suddenly opened. Some of the children were seriously injured. Investigators say the locking mechanism is not reliable.
At least 55 incidents have been reported worldwide, including 10 injuries that resulted in concussions, cuts and bruising. Four of those injuries occurred in the United States and involved cuts and bruises.
In May 2015, another recall was issued for Patrull KLÄMMA pressure-mounted baby gates because the friction was not strong enough to keep it secure.
IKEA is asking customers to stop using the gates immediately and return them to the store for a full refund. No proof of purchase is necessary. IKEA said it has “zero tolerance regarding child safety” and the faulty gates opened despite “approved tests to applicable standards.”
