Infant Sling Carriers Linked to Deadly Suffocation Risk for Babies
In June 2024, safety officials warned parents and caregivers not to use infant sling carriers that were sold on Walmart.com by Joybuy Marketplace Express due to a risk of suffocation, falls, severe injury, or death.
They were sold online at Walmart.com from September 2020 through April 2023 for between $15 and $21.
What is the Problem?
The recalled infant sling carriers violate the Safety Standard for Sling Carriers. There are several hazards, according to the recall:
- Lack of structural integrity
- Babies can fall out of the sling carrier
- Suffocation hazard
- Inadequate restraint system
- No warning labels or instructions about how to safely position the infant to prevent suffocation
What is the Risk?
Parents who use infant sling carriers must be careful to keep the baby’s face clear to prevent suffocation. The baby must be kept in a safe position to prevent the baby from curling into a position with their chin resting on or near their chest, which can result in suffocation.
How To Identify Recalled Infant Sling Carriers
The recall involves about 1,160 infant sling carriers that were sold on Walmart.com by Joybuy Marketplace Express. The carriers do not have a label or a brand-name on the product.
Sling carriers are designed to be used by an adult to carry an infant. The carriers have an adjustable shoulder strap, black plastic buckle, and a black hook-and-loop waist and crotch restraint.
The infant sling carriers were sold in a variety of colors.
