UPDATE: GE Issues Another Class 1 Recall for Giraffe Incubators, Warming Beds

In December 2019, the FDA announced another Class 1 recall involving Giraffe Incubators, Giraffe OmniBeds, and Carestations after 6 infants fell out of the beds and suffered skull fractures, hematoma (bleeding), or edema (swelling).

The recall involves nearly 23,000 incubators and warming beds made between April 2008 and September 2019. The problem is that the bedside panels or the porthole doors can look closed when they are not actually securely latched. Infants can fall out of the bed if the infant touches the panel when it is unlatched.

Infant Warmer Recall

In July 2019, GE Healthcare recalled over 25,000 hospital infant warmer beds after receiving at least 338 consumer complaints, including 2 reports of infants falling out of the beds and fracturing their skulls.

Class 1 Recall for Risk of Injury & Death

GE Healthcare issued a Class 1 recall for all models of the Panda iRes infant warmer bed, which is used in Labor and Delivery units, and the Giraffe infant warmer, which is used in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The infant warmer beds are designed to radiate infrared heat to keep babies warm, as well as monitor the health of newborns.

What is the Problem?

The side panels and safety latches can crack or break if the Giraffe or Panda i-Res Infant Warmer is moved using the bedside panels instead of the handles.

The infant warmer beds have maneuvering handles, but in many cases, healthcare workers were grabbing the panels to move the beds — which each weigh about 100 kg or 220 lbs — causing the panels or safety latches to crack or break open, posing a fall hazard to babies.

According to the FDA, “If an infant comes in contact with a bedside panel with a cracked or broken latch, the panel can disengage and fall open, no longer protecting the infant from falling from the warmer.”

The defective side panels and latches on Giraffe and Panda i-Res infant warmers appears to be a “human factors-related design” flaw, according to the Class 1 recall notice posted by the FDA.

What Infant Warmers Were Recalled?

The recall involves all Giraffe Infant Warmers and Panda i-Res Infant Warmers that were manufactured and distributed between October 2007 and February 2019 with Model Numbers 2063568-001-XXXXXX, 2063570-001-XXXXXX, M1112198-XXXXXX, M1118179-XXXXXX .
