February 1, 2024 — Consumer Reports is demanding a recall for two types of bassinets that can tilt and cause babies to suffocate.
Consumer Reports also sent a letter to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) outlining safety concerns with two bassinets that can tilt:
Since 2019, at least 5 baby deaths have been linked to various brands of cantilevered baby bassinets, according to Consumer Reports:
“These two bassinets make it difficult for babies not to roll over while they sleep because the bassinets will not stay level. Major retailers including Amazon, Target, and Walmart sell these products.”
These cantilevered bassinets are designed with supports only on one side, which allows them to tilt. This creates an unsafe sleep environment because babies are more likely to roll and get trapped with their face pressed against the fabric, posing a suffocation risk.
Consumer Reports investigated online reviews and found hundreds of complaints from parents who said that the Ingenuity and Halo bassinets tilted and caused the baby to roll over.
Tragically, two baby deaths were linked to the Ingenuity Dream & Grow Bedside Bassinet. In both cases, the babies were put to sleep on their backs, but later found on their stomach.
Consumer Reports said it has sent a letter to alert the CPSC about safety concerns. They are calling on the CPSC to investigate the Ingenuity and Halo Bassinet and push for a recall.
