August 1, 2023 — A woman from California who was burned by an Instant Pot Smart-60 Pressure Cooker has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The plaintiff, Suzette W., accuses Instant Brands of misleading her about the safety features of the Instant Pot.
In April 2021, she claims to have suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” when she was able to open the lid on her Instant Pot Smart-60 Pressure Cooker while it was still under pressure.
The pressure trapped within the unit “caused the scalding hot contents to be projected from the unit and into the surrounding area,” resulting in her suffering burn injuries, according to her lawsuit.
She is seeking compensation for her serious bodily injuries, medical expenses, lost wages, physical pain, mental anguish, diminished enjoyment of life, and other damages.
In her lawsuit, she claims that the manufacturer is well aware of issues with the Instant Pot Smart-60, because around 1,000 of the pressure cookers were recalled in July 2015 due to reports of electrical shocks.
The manufacturer, Instant Brands Inc., is accused of selling an “unreasonably dangerous” product due to defective lids that can be rotated and opened while the unit is under pressure.
The Instant Pot Smart-60 Lawsuit was filed on March 29, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Eastern Division) — Case Number 1:23-cv-01964.
