March 12, 2024 — A man from Kentucky who was burned when he opened the lid on his Instant Pot Pressure Cooker has filed a lawsuit.
The plaintiff, Darryl D., is a resident of Franklin, Kentucky, who accuses the manufacturer of selling a defective pressure cooker.
He claims that he was seriously burned in March 2023 when he opened the lid on his Instant Pot DUO 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker (model DUO 60 V3).
According to his lawsuit, the lid failed to lock until the pressure cooker was completely de-pressurized and safe to open. Instead, he was able to easily twist open the lid, “allowing its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker.”
His lawsuit accuses the Florida-based manufacturer, Midea America Co., of misleading him about the pressure cooker’s so-called “safety mechanisms,” such as the “pressure control features.”
He claims that these safety features were defective because they failed to prevent him from opening the lid until the pressure cooker was de-pressurized.
He specifically cites claims in the product’s Owner’s Manual, such as: “Once enough steam has built up inside the inner pot, the float valve pops up and locks the lid of the cooker in place for safe pressure cooking.”
His Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed on February 20, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey — Case Number 2:24-cv-00954.
