Jardiance and Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Jardiance is the brand-name of empagliflozin, a prescription medication for type-2 diabetes that was approved in 2014. It helps control blood-sugar levels by increasing the amount of sugar that is excreted from the body in urine.
In May 2015, the FDA issued a Safety Communication to warn about a possible risk of diabetic ketoacidosis from Jardiance and other drugs in its class.
The condition occurs when the body is unable to use glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream as an energy source, and must instead burn fat or muscle. When these cells break down, they release poisonous fatty acids known as ketones.
In as little as 24 hours, ketones can build up to dangerous levels and cause a number of symptoms. Without treatment, ketoacidosis can cause a deadly heart attack, blood clot, cerebral edema (swelling in the brain), coma, and even death.
Signs & Symptoms
The FDA recommends seeking emergency medical attention for symptoms of ketoacidosis, such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Unusual fatigue or sleepiness
- Confusion
What is the problem?
The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm. However, our attorneys are not filing a Jardiance class action against Boehringer Ingelheim. Instead, we are filing individual lawsuits and only accepting cases involving the most serious types of injuries, such as:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Kidney infections
- Kidney failure
- Urinary tract infections
- Pyelonephritis
- Urosepsis
- Fournier’s gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum)
About Class Actions
Class actions are useful when it doesn’t make sense to file an individual lawsuit — for example, when thousands of people are seeking a refund after buying a defective product. Plaintiffs consolidate their individual claims into one claim and collectively seek compensation through a jury trial or settlement.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Jardiance Class Action
The problem with class actions is that they can have disadvantages for people who developed severe side effects after taking defective drugs. They may have to watch attorneys accept a “low-ball” settlement and take a huge cut of the payout.
Our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits because we believe everyone who was injured by Jardiance deserves personal legal representation. We specialize in holding pharmaceutical companies accountable by filing lawsuits. If you were injured by Jardiance, we may be able to help you seek compensation for:
- Pain and suffering
- Medical expenses
- Lost income
- Decreased quality of life
- And more
