Kenmore Stove Fire Recall
In May 2024, Kenmore (now a part of Electrolux Home Products Inc.) and Frigidaire re-announced a recall for about 203,000 free-standing electric stoves that can catch on fire.
What Happened?
At least 12 people were burned or suffered smoke inhalation injuries due to a recalled Kenmore or Frigidaire stove. There were 14 reports of fires, and more than 300 reports of the stoves behaving erratically, not turning off, or heating to the wrong temperature.
What is the Problem?
There are several safety hazards linked to the recalled Kenmore stoves, depending on the model, such as:
- 1) Turning on spontaneously without being switched on
- 2) Failing to turn off after being switched off
- 3) Heating to different temperatures than what was selected
How Many People Were Injured?
The recalled stoves were sold from 2001 through 2009. When the original recall was announced in August 2009, there were 126 reports of incidents, 4 reports of burn, and 2 reports of property damage.
Since the recall in 2009, there were an additional 212 reports of the stoves behaving erratically. The reports include 14 fires, 8 people who were burned on their hands or arms, and smoke inhalation injuries.
