Where Was the Cottage Cheese Sold?

La Ceiba Foods distributed the recalled products to supermarkets, retail stores, and restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. The FDA warns consumers not to eat these recalled products. To get a refund, you can return the cheese to the store where it was purchased. You can also check the FDA outbreak investigation for updates.

What Is the Listeria Risk?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive on refrigerated and frozen foods. The symptoms usually begin within 2 weeks, but they can start the same day or as late as 10 weeks after exposure. Not everyone shows symptoms.

If the symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Muscle aches and tiredness
  • Confusion and loss of balance
  • Pregnancy complications (miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, infection of the newborn baby, etc.)

How Many People Got Sick?

As of June 2026, health officials have reported 12 illnesses and 1 death in the outbreak linked to Clover Hill Dairy cheese, according to the FDA. The death was reported in Maryland. The outbreak strain has been making people sick since 2023, with cases reported in Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

What Should I Do?

Throw away the recalled cheese products or return it to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, on behalf of Clover Hill Dairy, at 240-528-8850 extension 327.

The FDA and CDC recommend throwing away any recalled cheese and sanitizing refrigerators, containers, and surfaces it may have touched, because Listeria can survive in cold temperatures and spread to other foods. If you or a family member got sick, our lawyers may be able to help you understand your legal options.
