LightEyez MSM Eye Drops Linked to Infection Risk

In August 2023, the FDA warned consumers not to buy or use LightEyez MSM Eye Drops because they may cause severe infections.

What Happened?

FDA testing discovered that LightEyez MSM Eye Drops were contaminated with several types of dangerous bacteria, including Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, Mycolicibacterium, and Methylorubrum.

What is the Risk?

People who use LightEyez MSM Eye Drops could suffer from eye infections, vision loss, blindness, or even death, according to the FDA:

“Using contaminated eye drops could result in minor to serious vision-threatening infection which could possibly progress to a life-threatening infection.”

What Should I Do?

Anyone who used LightEyez MSM Eye Drops or another contaminated product called Dr. Berne’s MSM Eye Drops 5% Solution should seek medical attention immediately if they develop any symptoms of an eye infection.

The symptoms of an eye infection may include eye pain, discharge from the eyes (may be yellow, green or clear), swelling, red eye or eyelid, blurry vision, increased sensitivity to light, itchy eyes, vision loss, and more.

Do MSM Eye Drops Actually Work?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a chemical supplement that is NOT approved for any use in eye drops. Therefore, products like LightEyez MSM Eye Drops “are unapproved drugs and illegally marketed in the U.S.,” according to the FDA.

There are many MSM supplements being advertised online for various uses, including everything from arthritis to hay fever and aging skin, but “there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses,” according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

What is Pseudomonas?

Pseudomonas is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. It is highly resistant to antibiotics, which makes it hard for doctors to treat infections before they spread.

Pseudomonas Bacteria in Eye Drops Causes Deadly Infection Outbreak

This is not the first time that Pseudomonas has been found in eye drops. In 2023, at least 81 people in 18 states were infected with an “extensively drug-resistant” strain of Pseudomonas after using EzriCare Artificial Tears. Four people died when the infection spread to their bloodstream, and at least 14 people suffered vision loss or complete blindness due to the infection.
