B. Cepacia Outbreak Linked to Medline Cleansing Foam
In May 2018, the FDA reported an outbreak of B. cepacia infections associated with Medline Remedy No-Rinse Cleansing Foam in the following 3 states: California (7), Pennsylvania (7), and New Jersey (1). All 15 patients were hospitalized before they were infected.
What is Medline Cleansing Foam?
Medline Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing Foam is used in hospitals and home-health care settings to bathe patients who can’t bathe themselves due to surgery or illness.
What is the Problem?
The FDA is particularly concerned because No-Rinse Cleansing Foam is not intended to be washed off a patient’s skin. This may significantly increase the patient’s risk of a B. cepacia infection, especially in patients with underlying chronic illness, cancer, or immune disease.
Medline Cleansing Foam Recall
Medline announced a recall for No-Rinse Cleansing Foam after multiple products tested positive for contamination with several species of B. cepacia bacteria. The bacteria matched the strains that were isolated from people who developed infections.
What Products Were Recalled?
The manufacturer recalled 4-oz and 8-oz bottles of Medline Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing Foam from the following lot numbers: M05703, M06691, and M07247.
Symptoms of B. Cepacia Infections
The symptoms of B. cepacia infection vary widely, ranging from no symptoms at all to life-threatening infections of the skin, soft tissue, surgical wounds, urinary tract, lungs, and other parts of the body. The symptoms depend on where the infection is located. Some types of B. cepacia bacteria are antibiotic-resistant and difficult to treat.
