Metabolic Meals Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

On September 5, 2025, health officials linked a Salmonella outbreak to Metabolic Meals, a home-delivery meal service, with at least 16 people in 10 states infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella since July 2025.

The Salmonella outbreak has been linked to specific Metabolic Meals that were delivered the week of July 28, 2025, including the following items:

What Caused The Outbreak?

No single ingredient has been pinpointed as the source of this outbreak yet, but 10 sick people who were interviewed by health officials reported eating Metabolic Meals in the week before their illness began.

Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) laboratory tests on bacteria samples from sick people confirmed that they were all infected with a highly-similar strain of Salmonella, which suggests a common source.

“Investigators are working to determine a specific source of contamination,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Investigation Update on September 5, 2025.

Where Did People Get Sick?

Locations where Salmonella illnesses have been linked to Metabolic Meals include the following 10 states:

  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin

How Many People Got Sick?

The food poisoning outbreak linked to Metabolic Meals infected 16 people in 10 states with Salmonella, including 7 people who were hospitalized, between July 24 and August 15, 2025. No deaths were reported.

The CDC said it is likely that the true number of illnesses is higher, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states listed above, because some people get sick and recover at home without undergoing laboratory tests to confirm that they were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella.

Salmonella Infections May Be Antibiotic-Resistant

The strain of Salmonella in the Metabolic Meals outbreak is antibiotic-resistant, which may increase the risk of complications for people who get very sick and require antibiotics to cure the infection.

The risk of severe, life-threatening complications is highest for young children (under 5), adults over 65, pregnant women, and people with vulnerable immune systems due to underlying health conditions.

According to the CDC, bacteria samples of Salmonella from sick people showed resistance to some commonly-used antibiotics, including nalidixic acid and nonsusceptibility to ciprofloxacin (NSC).

“Most people with Salmonella illness recover without antibiotics. However, if antibiotics are needed, some illnesses in this outbreak may not be treatable with some commonly recommended antibiotics and may require a different antibiotic choice.”

What Should I Do?

Do not eat the affected Metabolic Meals products. If you have any of these products in your home, throw them away or contact the company.

You will also need to wash all items and surfaces that may have touched the products, due to the risk of cross-contamination.

If you or a loved one got sick from Metabolic Meals, seek medical attention for severe symptoms of Salmonella, which may include:

  • Diarrhea and fever higher than 102ºF
  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that you can’t keep liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration, like not peeing much, dry mouth and throat, feeling dizzy when standing up, etc.

Food Poisoning Outbreaks From Home-Delivery Meal Services

Home-delivery meals are supposed to be convenient and healthy, which is why customers pay a premium. When instead the meals become a source of serious illness or hospitalization, victims have a right to file lawsuits.

This is not the first time an outbreak of food poisoning has been linked to home-delivery meals. In 2022, hundreds of people got sick from Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles that contained tara flour. Two years later, the FDA declared tara flour “unsafe for human consumption.”

Food Poisoning Lawsuits

Food poisoning lawsuits are commonly filed by victims in major outbreaks. These lawsuits can be very complex and widespread, especially when they involve a lot of people who got sick in multiple states.

Outbreaks Linked to Contaminated Ingredients in Home-Delivery Meals

The problem is that home-delivery meal services typically prepare massive amounts of food all at once, and send the meals to thousands of customers each week. If there is an issue with a single ingredient that is contaminated, a lot of people can get sick.

Settlements In Food Poisoning Class Action Lawsuits

As the investigation unfolds, one ingredient might be pinpointed as the source of the outbreak. Lawsuits may then involve the company that supplied the contaminated ingredient, as well as the home-delivery service that sent it to unsuspecting customers.

These lawsuits may end in settlements with the supplier or the home-delivery meal service. For example, in October 2024, two Daily Harvest suppliers paid a $7.6 million settlement to end a class action lawsuit.

How Can a Lawsuit Help?

Food poisoning lawsuits can help victims seek justice and financial compensation. Instead of a class action, these lawsuits are typically individual cases that involve people who have their own attorney.

Lawyers will advocate for their client, hold the company accountable for selling contaminated food, and help the victim seek a financial payout.

Lawsuits for serious food poisoning illnesses could potentially receive financial compensation through a settlement or jury verdict. These lawsuits will seek a payout for damages, such as:

  • Physical pain and suffering due to illness
  • Emotional stress, anxiety during hospitalization, etc.
  • Medical bills (and future medical treatment)
  • Lost income or wages while sick
  • Long-term complications, disabilities, or ongoing health problems
  • Wrongful death of a loved one
  • And more
