MG217 Eczema Cream Recalled for Staphylococcus aureus Contamination

In May 2026, Pharmacal recalled one lot of MG217 Multi-Symptom Treatment Cream & Skin Protectant Eczema Cream after the product was found to be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. No illnesses have been reported to date.

What Is the Problem?

The recalled MG217 eczema cream may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that lives harmlessly on skin in many healthy people but can cause severe infection when it enters the body through broken skin. Because eczema cream is applied directly to broken, cracked, and inflamed skin, the contamination may create a direct route for the bacteria to enter the body.

Pharmacal described the risk in its FDA-published recall notice as follows:

“Use of the product could result in a range of infections from localized to severe or life-threatening adverse events. Patients with weakened immune systems or compromised skin — such as those with wounds, burns, or skin disorders — are at increased risk for serious infections, including skin and skin structure infections, infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), bone and joint infections, bloodstream infections, and life-threatening conditions like sepsis and septic shock.”

To date, Pharmacal has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.

What Are the Dangers of Staphylococcus aureus?

Staphylococcus aureus (commonly called “staph”) is a bacteria that can cause a wide spectrum of infections. According to the CDC, staph bacteria are a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections and can cause serious harm when they enter the body through cuts, wounds, or compromised skin.

When applied directly to eczema-damaged skin, contaminated cream can introduce staph bacteria into the deeper layers of skin and, from there, into the bloodstream. Once invasive, staph can travel to virtually any organ system.

Possible Staphylococcus aureus infections include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections — boils, abscesses, cellulitis, impetigo, and folliculitis
  • Bloodstream infections (bacteremia) — bacteria circulating in the blood
  • Sepsis and septic shock — a body-wide inflammatory response that can be fatal
  • Infective endocarditis — infection of the heart valves
  • Pneumonia — infection of the lungs
  • Osteomyelitis — bone infection
  • Septic arthritis — joint infection
  • Toxic shock syndrome — a rapid, life-threatening reaction to staph toxins
  • Food poisoning — when staph toxins are ingested

Some staph strains, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), are resistant to common antibiotics like methicillin, penicillin, amoxicillin, and oxacillin. MRSA infections are much harder to treat and are linked to longer hospital stays, higher treatment costs, and increased mortality.

Who Is at Highest Risk?

Pharmacal identified two groups as being at the greatest risk of serious harm from the contaminated product:

  • People with weakened immune systems
  • People with compromised skin — including wounds, burns, and skin disorders

Eczema is characterized by inflamed, cracked, and broken skin. This is the precise condition that the recalled product was sold to treat. That overlap is what makes this recall due to bacterial contamination especially concerning.
